What are “chimney cakes?”

Chimney cakes are a traditional Eastern European pastry made with sweet bread and coated with sugar, cinnamon, almond flakes, or cookie crumbs. When the baked cakes are removed from the cooking roll, smoke can be seen rising from the middle, resembling a smoking chimney—hence the name “chimney cakes!”

There are so many names that relate to this sweet, crunchy, fluffy, irresistible treat:

Get to Know Us

Nicolle and Damon are proud Purdue graduates with a shared passion for travel, coffee, and building community.

Their first taste of chimney cake came during a 2022 trip to Prague—and they were instantly inspired. Wanting to bring a piece of that experience back home, they created Kürtőskalács to share this special Eastern European treat with the Greater Lafayette community, which they’re proud to call home.

Kürtőskalács was founded as a warm, welcoming space for students, families, and visitors alike—to try something new, enjoy unique flavors, and embrace a different culture.

We hope you enjoy the sweet (and savory!) flavors of this beloved traditional snack.
